CHAPTER 2

Brook moved slowly through the club, the subject of much attention from other club-goers. He ignored them all, his focus on finding a drink and his friend.

“Well, well, well, Lord Oliver deigns to make an appearance.”

Brook looked at the speaker, his lip curling in disdain as he saw a shabby-looking vampire glaring at him from one end of the bar.

“I see the club is still attracting low-lifes, Dieter.”

Dieter and his nest were one of the reasons Brook avoided clubs and his own kind. Messy eaters leaving a trail of bodies across the capital for anyone to find. They were the worst example of vampires Brook had ever met, and he would have gladly staked Dieter if it wouldn’t have been tantamount to a declaration of war. He mourned the days when vampires were the elite of shadow walkers, rather than the dregs.

“What brings the great Lord Oliver Brook into Ethan’s?” Dieter sneered.

“Whatever it is, it’s none of your fucking business.”

Brook looked over his shoulder to see one of the few vampires he counted as a friend scowling at Dieter. He smiled at the newcomer.

“Tim, good to see you.”

Lord Timothy Weston grinned at Brook. “And you, old friend. Your usual?”

Pointedly ignoring Dieter, Brook hugged Lord Timothy. “Get me away from that cavity-ridden fang before I do something I’ll regret.” Tim laughed. “You’ll never do it. You love him too much.”

“Don’t you believe it.”

“You sired him,” Tim pointed out. “However, I won’t miss him if you do decide to stake him. I might miss his latest human fluff though. He’s beautiful.” He pointed out the red-haired man hanging off Dieter’s arm.

Brook stared at the human. “Meh, he’s all right.” Redheads had never been his thing.

Tim took two long tumblers from the barman and handed one to Brook. “You sound so cynical, Brook.”

Brook hadn’t ordered a drink. He didn’t pay. He was given. In this instance a long glass of warm human blood which Ethan’s had on tap.

They sat down at an empty table and watched the vampires, shifters and humans intermingle in a strange byplay. Newcomers were easy to spot by their wide-eyes and the scent of fear reeking from every pore.

“Why do I come here?” Brook asked.

“Because you’re bored, and because you’re looking for something you can’t find out there.”

Brook watched the byplay with an unusual interest. “Why do they come here?”

Tim frowned. “Who?”

“Humans. Why do they come to a place where they’ll probably be eaten?”

“They might not. Most of them go home safe and sound to live another day.” Tim finished his drink. The empty glass was immediately replaced with a full crimson tumbler.

“You have them well trained,” Brook said.

“I own the place. They should be waiting on my every move. They know the consequences if they don’t.” It wasn’t an empty threat. Lord Weston was renowned for instant action when he was displeased.

Another glass of blood replaced Brook’s. “How long is it now?”

“Almost a hundred and thirty three years. If you remember you sold the place to me just before Christmas eighteen ninety.
